The GEF Small Group Programme
RESTORATION OF OLPH COMMUNITY CISTERN
As a corporate programme of the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the GEF Small Grants Programme (SGP), implemented by United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) aligns its Operational Phase strategies with those of the GEF and co-financing partners, and provides a global portfolio of innovative, inclusive, and impactful projects that address global environmental and sustainable development issues.

GEF SGP remains the mechanism for bringing the groups together strengthening their capacity to implement projects. The implemented projects ensured sustainable livelihoods for the vulnerable members of communities and increased the capacity of project implementers and stakeholders, all while addressing the GEF Focal Areas: Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation is our target here.

The key results would be:

  • Improved water storage and security
  • Greater knowledge of climate change mitigation options.
  • Long-term awareness of climate change.

The challenge to be addressed is the water shortage given the intensifying drought conditions as a result of the effects of climate change. Antigua and Barbuda is no exception.

The Our Lady of Perpetual Help (OLPH) project is consistent with the SGP Country Program strategic initiative as it attempts to improve community resilience and awareness/knowledge as it relates to climate change as well as access to long term solutions for water security. Hence the development of “Our Lady of Perpetual Help (OLPH) Catholic Community Water Harvest and Climate Change Mitigation Project."

Our Lady of Perpetual Help (OLPH) Catholic Community Water Harvest and Climate Change Mitigation Project intends to:

1. Improve the harvesting and storage of water to address the water security and efficiency concerns.
1.1. Retrofit the 39,000 gallon above-ground cistern at the east end of the church building.
2. Build awareness and social capacity of climate change and water harvesting options through:
2.1. Training sessions for the community on climate change mitigation and water security.
2.2. Climate change and associated risk mitigation activities knowledge articles posted in the bulletin and documentaries such as this.
